The competition between BT Vision and Sky gets murkier

With the introduction of BT Vision offering Sky Sports at a much lower price to new customers, BT has visions of increasing its customer base considerably. This special TV package is offered to those customers who opt for broadband and calls packages as well.

Though it is a known fact that more and people are likely to sign up for BT Vision as the football season draws nearer, but as BT loses out on its revenues, there is no logical reason why this move was initiated in the first place.

As per earlier experiences, two companies viz. ITV Digital and Sentanta Sports who tried to take on Sky have faced unimaginable losses and defeat; it seems difficult for BT Vision to win this power game. Though BT Vision is a subsidiary of BT, the telecom giant it is still too early to say whether BT Vision could win this gamble or not.

On the other hand, though BT is promoting Sky Sports, it is asking its customers to pay extra for additional Sky Sports channel through which they can enjoy ESPN channel as well. Sports fans need to bear in mind only Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 are being offered while the extremely popular ones being Sky Sports 3 and 4 or even its Sky Sports News HD is not on the offer. Hence BT’s offer of Sky Sports is just a basic marketing gimmick in order to attract new customers at the onset of the football season.

The only plus point being sports lovers can watch all the entire football matches at a much cheaper price. But after the football season, the viewers are not going to get much entertained through Sky Sports offered by BT Vision.

Tinopolis to implement the reforms

Ron Jones, the lead of Tinopolis, a very well known the television production company laid down a bid in favor of the pilots in Wales and Scotland. He talked about funding the news consortium (IFNC).He raised this point saying they never have got the advantage of being publicly subsidized into profitable franchises.

Jones further made this announcement saying that in case of the victory of Tinopolis in terms of the Welsh IFNC pilot contract, they would provide any of the news content as a public service without demanding any money in return. This news content will range right from the right from raw feeds to produced packages. This covers radio stations, community broadcasters, websites or newspapers as well. While on the other hand Tinopolis has no support of any partners in the bid that it is laying down.

There is yet another bid for Scotland, under which Tinopolis has the support of the popular Scottish newspaper groups including the Johnston Press, the Herald & Times Group and DC Thomson. However, the terms will be completely novel and non redundant with the newspapers for having equal share of the content. On the other hand the television feed would talks about offering the content without ant barter, as said by Jones.

The funds of the public, ranges to about £6m a year for Wales when it comes to pilot with an experience of about two years. Jones contradicted the ways of Tinopolis’s saying that this new introduction is simply a decentralized TV news service for Wales, which is very much not in terms with focus based techniques.

The digital revolution has already begun

The first brick of the digital revolution has been laid down. The days from 2010 to 2013 will witness a drastic change from analog free-to-air TV signals to digital-only signals. As expected, this may create a fear and a chaos amongst the viewers. However, the good part of the story is that the Macleay area will stick to its analog signal two more years.

As per the plans of the Australian Government, the schedule to launch the Digital TV Switchover in the Northern Rivers area is from July 1 to December 31, 2012.Macleay is already fortunate to get the very first digital signals. As per the present status, analog and digital broadcasts are transmitted simultaneously.

The older process has been criticized in terms of the sheer wastage of the funds and other resources. It wastefully uses most of the ‘broadcast spectrum’, a term coined for the space available for terrestrial television broadcasts. An end to the use of analog signals will vacate a large amount of the spectrum for it to be harnessed as other services.

It will not take too long for the use of analog TV equipment to come to a halt in Australia. " Cabling Services Bradley Booth expressed his views encouraging people to reap the benefits of digital TV to the max.“The general public should move towards the use of digital TV and enjoy the advantages from the new channels. They can also avail the enlarged quality picture and better acoustics,” he said.
